The Oxfordshire village of East Hendred, 4 miles east of Wantage and 4 miles west of Didcot, is located in the beautiful area known as the Vale of the White Horse. This seems quite appropriate since the village held its own race meeting in the latter part of the 19th century. The village is steeped in history, with the remains of an Iron Age Long Barrow, known as Scutchamer Knob, situated just 2 miles south of the village. The race meeting was held on Tuesday 17th March 1874 and took place on Hendred and Chilton Down, with Topthorne winning the feature Downs House Hurdle. |
